The first part describes the journey made by the authors by ship to Spitzbergen to meet Andrée and assist with the preparations of the balloon equipment, hangar construction and inflation of the balloon for its unsuccessful 1896 flight.

Part 2 describes the transport of the balloon in 1897 to Dane's Island and detailed preparations, inflation and dramatic launch of the balloon.
