Introduction to educational resources for everyone

One of the aims of the BBM&L is to educate the public on lighter-than-air flight. Thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund we have created two educational resources for our website, with further resources planned.

How A Hot Air Balloon Works is aimed at everyone fascinated by hot air balloons, explaining the components of a balloon, the equipment needed, the basics of flying and the science behind how 'lift' is generated. It is illustrated with images of G-MUSM, the balloon in the collection registered to fly.

Up & Away! Hot Air Balloons Key Stage 1 is a 5 lesson education pack based around the National Curriculum History requirement to teach events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally. We have expanded the example given to teachers of the first aeroplane flight, to include the timeline of flight and focusing on balloons. The lessons are cross-curriculum, covering history, English, science, geography, maths, and art and design. There is a lesson plan, PowerPoint and worksheet for each lesson. The resources are unlocked to allow tailoring, to individual class needs and to be used as stand alone lessons.

We have created a teacher orientation video giving an overview of all five lessons.

Cameron Balloons - Children's Learning Resources is a link to the Cameron Balloons Kids Club resources, explaining hot air balloons and their history. It also includes a short video, 'How to Make a Hot Air Balloon,' which has clips from their balloon factory.

Further resources planned include, How A Gas Balloon Works, How An Airship Works, and a Glossary of Lighter-Than-Air Terms.
