The idea for The Blimp Book began when George Hall, an experienced aviation photographer, was assigned by Oui magazine to shoot a story (unrelated to the blimp) in an area where the Mayflower was flying. He lucked into a ride, all but forgot about the original assignment and decided then and there to produce a book of photographs of blimps blimps flying, blimps in repose, and the blimp's eye view of things. That was in 1972, and in the next four years he accompanied the Goodyear fleet across America and Europe, recording with his camera the startling beauty of these airships. Aboard the blimps, he also became aware of the unique perspective afforded from the slowly passing balcony of the gondola, and a sampling of these aerial landscapes is contained here as well.
