From 1952 to 1958 David Simons, an American Air Force scientist, was assigned to Holloman Air Force Base where Colonel John Stapp was conducting investigations into the possibilities of space flight. Simons was to be the man chosen to spend 24 hours on the threshold of space nineteen miles above the earth's surface in the minute capsule-like gondola of a balloon.
