Jeff's Journey into Ballooning
Jeff shared his journey into ballooning, starting with his first encounter at a launch flight where Peter Vale handed him a crown line. He described his first flight in 1981 from Hagley Hall and his subsequent involvement with the BBAC. Jeff explained that he initially focused on crewing and observing, documenting flights and scoring competitions, which he found enjoyable and rewarding.

 

Evolution of Modern Ballooning
Jeff and Jennifer discussed the evolution of ballooning over the years, highlighting the significant changes in technology and equipment. Jeff shared his experience of obtaining his pilot's licence, which took about two years, and mentioned his training with Roland Benbrook. He also described how he acquired his balloon through a deal with David Watkins, which included buying the trailer and its contents. Jeff noted the shift from traditional methods, such as using Ordnance Survey maps, to modern electronic tools like moving maps on laptops and iPads, which have made flying more efficient but less personal.
